Bootcamp in a Box Review

Primal1While I’m not necessarily opposed to guest blogs, it’s rare that someone has something unique or profound to say.

However, when Luke Robinson of Wolfpack Fitness told me a little bit about how he’s using our Bootcamp in a Box product to improve the quality of his bootcamps, I was instantly hooked.

Whether you run bootcamps or not, it’s refreshing to hear someone passionate talk about their love of fitness.

Read this and I guarantee you’ll be inspired as well.

“Eat more and move less.”

Not the typical advice you expect to hear from a nutritionist and fitness trainer, but then again, I’ve never been one for convention.

Who am I? My name is Luke Robinson, owner of WolfPack Fitness – a nutrition and fitness company headquartered on scenic river-side setting in the woods of Maine.

workhearterjustinAfter working as a nutritional and fitness consultant for over 100 clients in the past year, I’ve realized that our country has it dead wrong. Most people simply aren’t eating enough to keep their metabolisms going (and eating complete junk) and they are trying to do too much (read: 2 hour treadmill sessions).

At WolfPack, our formula is simple:

  1. Help clients gain a renewed appreciation for the gifts of humanity such as high quality food and a fully functioning body,
  2. Apply the latest nutrition and fitness science to get the most efficient and enjoyable results possible, and
  3. Provide the accountability and support of a loving community of like-minded peers and coaches who practice what they preach.

This recipe has helped us grow rapidly as a trusted source in the community for getting people healthy and fit without all the “Insanity.”

Eat right, lift heavy, enjoy some tasty carbs around workout times, and viola! Life-long health and happiness.

No it’s not magic, it’s science.

Unfortunately, this approach is still met with resistance from many folks around the world who –despite their ever growing waist lines – simply refuse to believe it can be that simple.

Why?

CInderDLBecause this approach does not hook consumers into pouring their time and money into reality tv shows, magazine sales, or the latest “fat burning” supplement.

Which leaves me, as a business owner, with a very short list of people whose information and products I trust to pass onto my clients.

Fortunately, this list includes such brilliant folks like Robb Wolf, John Meadows, Joel Jamieson, Kiefer, and Brett Contreras. So when I saw Joel Jamieson and Robb Wolf both supporting this new product from Mike Robertson, Jim Laird, and Molly Galbraith called Bootcamp in a Box – I knew it had to be a truly special product.

After 2 full months of utilizing BCIAB, I can honestly say it has been of the best investments I’ve made for WolfPack Fitness.

Prior to BCIAB, we had been running an “open to the public” Sunday Morning class called Primal Fitness. The premise of Primal Fitness is simple: get in a great gym-free workout using nature and some objects most people have lying around in their garage – logs, chains, tires, poles, cinder blocks, rope, etc.

The purpose of the class was to give potential new clients a glimpse into the no-frills, solutions over excuses, WolfPack Workout culture.

The workouts we designed for Primal Fitness were intense and required a decent level of athleticism. Those who had been working with us privately for some time had the experience and conditioning to complete the workouts but newcomers were often found taking time outs, hunched over with a cramp, or worse-yet, puking out back.

After their yak-session was complete, they often talked about feeling proud that they didn’t give up but the problem was, they never came back. We were left with that same core of 7 or 8 folks.

As a huge believer in life-long learning, I am never too proud to admit when I don’t know something or when I am wrong.

In this case, it was a bit of both.

Despite teaching our private clients the beautifully simple truth about fitness and nutrition (it doesn’t have to be that hard), our Sunday class only contributing to the myth that to get in shape, you have to do crazy, maniacal workouts that push you to the brink of consciousness.

I was missing a huge opportunity to hook these people onto the WolfPack Way, but was too hell bent on making the workouts “hard”. I was missing a vastly important part of the tool kit.

Bootcamp in a Box

Enter Boot Camp in A Box.

Within the first hour of exploring the BCIAB manual and accompanying DVD, I learned more about helping brand new trainees than I had in my previous 4 years of experience as a personal trainer.

The writing is intelligent, inspiring, and easy to understand. The correct progressions/regressions (and how to apply them) outlined in BCIAB are simply an invaluable tool for any trainer to have. The DVD ensures absolutely perfect understanding of the key performance principles for every movement.

And of course, the 6 months of training templates give you a fool-proof guide for properly executing the information provided.

Using the BCIAB template, I was able to totally revamp Primal Fitness class by “hiding the vegetables in the meatballs.” I effectively got newcomers to complete corrective exercise workout templates (the vegetables) while putting a primal/WolfPack spin on things (the meatballs).

primalfitnessfeb2013Kettlebell swings? How about buckets with things inside.

Offset farmers walk? Cinder blocks work just fine.

No Prowler sled? Let’s push a real sled through the snow (trainer in the sled optional).

Medicine ball slams? Sledge-hammer tire smashes.

No battle ropes? Nope, but we have some 20 foot chains.

These simple substitutions have allowed us to teach people the right things at the right level while getting them stronger each week and retaining our unique identity.

Fast forward 8 weeks and we’ve gone from 7 or 8 people at Primal Fitness to over 25 and growing weekly!

PFnewAnd the best part? We have men and women from age 13 to age 70 able to complete (and LOVE) the workouts!

One of our wonderful ladies even calls her WolfPack Workout “church.” That’s how meaningful and uplifting our Primal Fitness class has become as a result of BCIAB.
With a little creativity & ingenuity, I’ve even been able to design partnered versions of almost every template along with some relay races for the conditioning section.

This allowed us to keep the class flowing nicely as our numbers grow more and more. What’s left is a class that leaves people feeling invigorated and excited for more rather than defeated and discouraged.

As you can see, BCIAB goes so far beyond simply being a boot camp & workout template – What Jim, Molly, and Mike have created is a movement; the seeds of a revolution.

Any trainer who genuinely cares about his/her clients, and on a larger scale cares about changing this country for the better, owes it to themself to pick up BCIAB. Not only will you learn a vast array of technical knowledge that is far and away worth the price tag, but more importantly you will learn a philosophy that is priceless :

“Any trainer can make you tired, not every trainer can make you better.”

We live in a country where obesity and disease is unnecessarily growing by the day. Most people have convinced themselves that “they’re happy the way they are” because the prospect of getting in shape according to the methods shown on the latest late night infomercial or the jabroni trainer at the big box gym are daunting.

I don’t think anyone would disagree that a Big Mac and a couch sounds a hell of a lot better than starving yourself and spending 2 hours every single day doing some crazy, non-sustainable workout video.

But Jim Laird, Molly Galbraith, and Mike Robertson know there’s a better way.

You can be a beacon of hope for these people.

You can be their guide down the road of health and happiness that they’ve always wanted. You can be their “better way.”

And Bootcamp in a Box is a hell of a place to start.
