Q&A: Designer Athletes

Jerry Hughes - Indianapolis Colts Jerry Hughes - Indianapolis Colts

Hey Mike,

Keep up the great podcast!

One question for ya; your Designer Athletes article was one of the first articles I ever read on T-Nation.

Still think it's awesome, but I know it's been 6 years or so since you published it- what changes would you make now based on what you've learned over the years?

Thanks,

Travis

Travis -

Thanks for the kind words!

As far as Designer Athletes goes, here are a few random thoughts.

Could you make arguments for some power work?  More unilateral work?  Different exercise selections?  Sure on all accounts.

BUT, overall the template I outlined still works pretty well.

A few changes I might make now (it may help to have two browser windows open so you can toggle back and forth between the article and this blog):

The Kettlebell Windmill

The Kettlebell Windmill The Kettlebell Windmill

One of my favorite kettlebell exercises is the KB windmill.  I'm sure if Brett Jones is reading this he's getting a laugh out of it.  Here's the 1-minute story.

I wrote an article for Dragon Door a while back about how powerlifters can benefit from using kettlebells in their programming.  I put a picture of myself in there performing a windmill, and Brett subtly let me know that my technique was off.  It wasn't so much on purpose - I had been taught in correctly, but it was funny nonetheless.

I like the windmill for several reasons.  First and foremost, it's a great assessment tool.  Obviously you won't load this up on the first session with a client, but you can learn a lot of things about how your client moves from watching them attempt this exercise.

Do they move through their hips or lumbar...

Mistakes Trainers and Coaches Make 4-13-10

Keep it simple! Keep it simple!

Here's another mistake I see far too often.

Trainer Johnny starts to learn a little anatomy and training jargon, and so he assumes that everyone and their mother knows this stuff as well.

After all, who doesn't know what their TFL is?

Or why they shouldn't hyperextend their lumbar spine?

Look, I hate to break it to you, but your clients really don't care how smart you are.  If you can get them results, they will love you forever.  They don't care about their anterior pelvic tilt, they just want their back to stop hurting!

A smart man once told me, "If you can't explain it to a cocktail waitress on a napkin, you're making it too hard."

Sage words indeed.

Do your best to explain concepts and thoughts to your clients, without inundating them with technical jargon or fancy words

Barcelo Los Cabos Barcelo Los Cabos

It's been a crazy week, but I wanted to put this up before I left.  Here goes!

-  Evidently, Cressey and Reinold's DVD is still on sale!  Click here to pick it up before Wednesday, when the price goes up $30!

-  As I mentioned Thursday, I'm dialing in the details for the Midwest Performance Enhancement Seminar. I think we've settled on a location, and I'm hoping to have the presenters info pulled together by the end of the month.  Stay tuned!

-  A quick congratulations to my buddy Mike Irr, head strength coach for the Charlotte Bobcats.  The Bobcats qualified for the playoffs for the first time in team history, and I'm sure Mike played a big role in that.  Congrats Mike!

-  My gosh, the Single-Leg Solution (SLS) is so close!  Unfortunately I leave...
