Diet and Nutrition Tip

Get the Biggest Weight Loss Bang out of Green Tea
Mike Roussell

Green tea has become extremely popular over the past several years. When I went to the Experimental Biology Conference in April there was a TON of research regarding Green Tea and just about every ailment you could think of.

Probably the most popular ‘use’ of green tea is for weight loss (I have a quick video about this that I’ll be posting soon). The driving force behind all the green tea goodness is the antioxidants. So to maximize the benefit of green tea you need to extract all the antioxidants possible – right?

The easiest way to do this is to leave your tea bag in the water longer. Research suggests that you need to steep your tea ~3 minutes to extract maximum antioxidants.

Despite what Wikipedia says, If you have ever had green tea before then you know if you leave your tea bag in the water for 3 minutes you will have a very bitter cup of tea – I happen to like it strong and bitter but that may not be your cup of tea :)

Your other option is to reuse your tea bag. Don’t just steep it once. For your first cup of green tea only let the bag sit in the hot water (also called steeping) for 90 seconds. Then for your next cup of tea, reuse the same bag and let it steep for 2 minutes.

This will give you not only two great tasting cups of tea – it will also allow you to get as many antioxidants as possible out of each bag giving you maximum health benefits.

Exclusive Interview: Nate Green

MR:  Nate, it’s been a while since we’ve chatted!  For those who missed our first interview, please introduce yourself.

NG: As my friend Ron Burgundy would say, “I’m kind of a big deal.” Guys with colors as last names gotta stick together, you know?

All right, I’m kidding.

Let’s just say this: I’m a 23 year old kid who’s doing what he wants with his life.

MR:  A lot has changed for you both personally and professionally in the past couple of months, hasn’t it?

NG: Yeah, it’s been a crazy ride, but I feel like I’m finally hitting my groove.  I’ve completely switched professions. I’m in the process of moving, regaining a social life, honing my writing skills, and pushing myself in other areas.

It’s funny how “luck” works, you know? Someone more important than me once said that luck is when opportunity meets preparation. I believe that.

MR:  I do, too.  I also firmly believe “luck” happens to those who work the hardest, but I digress.

Let’s begin by discussing the T-nation thing a bit.  What is your role there now?

NG: I’m now a contributing editor to Testosterone., which is a dream come true. Five years ago, I remember reading the magazine and thinking “I want to be a part of this.”

My role? Well, Tim Patterson sends me new supplements and tells me to take them. I’m like a guinea pig. (Kidding…kind of.)

I conduct interviews, travel to seminars, and research and report on things I think the Testosterone audience will like. It’s really a dream job. I get paid to write about training, girls, sex, and travel. What could be better than that?

MR:  Yeah, that doesn’t sound too bad at all.  And while the new T-nation gig is sweet, you’ve also got a new book coming out.  Do explain.

NG:  If you really get down to it, most guys want to lift heavy stuff and transform their bodies to improve their chances of hooking up with hot girls. I don’t care if it’s a one-night stand, a long relationship, or keeping your wife happy—every guy trains to some degree to look better to increase their hook up potential.

But here’s what’s interesting. Most guys have absolutely no idea what kind of body or muscles girls actually find attractive. (Hint: it has absolutely nothing to do with biceps, chest or abs.)

I pored through a ton of research on evolutionary biology, dominance indicators, and sex to find out what women are subconsciously attracted to. I then adapted the programs I’ve used for myself, high school, college, and even pro athletes to accomplish what every guys wants: a body that looks badass, moves well, and automatically flips girl’s attraction switches.

Built for Show: Four Body Changing Workouts for Building Muscle, Losing Fat, and Looking Good Enough to Hook Up is a lifestyle and workout book with over a year’s worth of programming. If I wasn’t in the fitness industry, it’s the kind of book I’d want to read.

Lou Schuler was the “adult on the project” and really added some value, and Avery publishing decided it was unique and effective enough to publish. I’m pretty damn excited about it.

MR:  So who is “Built for Show” geared towards?

NG: You’d get the notion from reading the cover that it’s strictly for teenagers and guys in their twenties. While that is the target audience, I firmly believe any guy of any age will benefit from it.

The programming is top-notch, the writing is clear and funny (of course, I’m biased), the nutritional strategies are reality-based, and there’s a ton of lifestyle tips including a few chapters on fashion, and actually picking up girls.

MR:  Sounds good man!  Now this wouldn’t be a good interview without discussing your current training.  Who is this beast of a trainer you’ve been consulting with?  And why did you get with him in the first place?

NG: So, I’m driving with a bunch of guys to cover a story for Testosterone and someone starts passing around Hot Tamales chewy candies. I take a handful and pop ’em in my mouth, and my friend says, “Nate, you should be ashamed. What would Mike Robertson say?”

The only answer that popped into my head was “Do box squats.”

So there you go.

Really, though, your programming has been phenomenal and has really made me a lot stronger and mobile. My joints feel amazing and I’m putting up big numbers in the gym.

We both know how difficult it is to write your own training program. No matter what you know, you always end up ignoring your weak points and highlighting your stronger points. So hiring you to help me with my shoulder mobility and postural problems from years of sitting and writing was one of the best decisions I’ve made this year.

MR:  You know the funny thing is, a lot of the pundits out there talk down about “corrective” exercise.  How do you feel now vs. before?  What has happened with your strength and physique?  You must’ve wasted away and look like an Ethiopian or something now, right?

NG: My strength has increased dramatically, especially in all my major lifts. My squats and deads are going up easily and my hips feel fantastic. It’s interesting; I tell people that I’m doing a lot more “corrective” exercises and they think I’m wasting away and doing ineffective and boring movements. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I feel really great with how I look right now. I’m 5’9 and sitting at 185 pounds with about 7% body fat.

MR:  That’s awesome man, and I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better.

Switching gears again: While you’re younger than me, I often look on in admiration at all the things you’ve accomplished at such a young age.  What do you see on the horizon for Nate Green in the future?

NG: That means a lot coming from you, Mike. I’ve looked up to you and a handful of other fitness guys for years and really appreciate all you’ve done for fitness and for helping a kid like me along the way.

Right now, I’m just settling into my new position with Testosterone, brainstorming article ideas, and trying to push the envelope by being smart, funny, and helpful. I’ve got a lot of interviews and media appearances coming up with the launch of Built for Show, and I’m looking forward to traveling, writing, and having fun.

MR:  You kick ass man.   Where can my readers find out more about you and “Built for Show?”

NG: They can download a free report “Two Things Women Hate About Your Body (and a Few Things They Love)” on my blog at http://www.thenategreenexperience.com.

And they can preorder my book on Amazon for less than $14 here: http://www.amazon.com/Built-Show-Nate-Green/dp/1583333193

(And if they buy the book and send a copy of the receipt to [email protected], I’d love to personally answer any training, business, or lifestyle questions they may have.)

MR:  Sounds great, Nate – I’m sure the readers appreciate it!  Thanks for being with us here today!

Stay Strong

MR
