Strength Coach Podcast
For those of you that may still be on the fence about attending the seminar, Bill and I did a brief interview on the topics we’ll be covering for the Strength Coach Podcast (linked below). Many thanks to Anthony Renna for helping us out with this!
Testimonials: Magnificent Mobility
I was doing a pretty good warm-up previously, but it wasn’t thorough enough and didn’t hit all the important areas. I had some back problems that sidelined me for a week or so, but as I got back into it, I started incorporating MM and I feel excellent. I ust played hoops 2 nights in a row (I’m 37), and my legs (and back, and everything really) felt great and I played some of the best hoops in years. A side benefit is my kids watch me do some of the exercises and they like to try to imitate dad.
Thanks fellas – I hope to be going strong for many more years.
Training Tip
Learn while in your car!
We’re living in the “information age” and there’s no reason you can’t spend more time learning. And no, I’m not talking about more reading or reviewing DVD’s – instead, start listening to audio CD’s and/or Podcasts while in your car!
Quite simply, there are a ton of great shows our there to choose from. I’ll provide some links below in case you aren’t familiar with the sources.
Whether your goal is to become a better coach or total Elite, why are you wasting time during your commutes? Listen to some high-quality audio and kick your learning into overdrive!
Nutrition Tip
Nutrient Dense vs. Calorie Dense
By Mike Roussell
Are your carbohydrates nutrient dense or calorie dense? This is a key question that you need to ask yourself each time you sit down to eat.
Nutrient Dense carbohydrates contain lots of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and fiber. These are carbohydrates such as spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, apples, and other fruits and vegetables. Calorie Dense carbohydrates contain lower amounts of vitamins, minerals and more calories from actual carbohydrates. Examples of these foods are rice, pasta, corn, flour tortillas, and breads. You want your diet to be full of nutrient dense carbohydrates all the time and then you want to eat calorie dense carbohydrates in the couple hours following your workouts.
Eating this way will allow you to consume more food while at the same time improve your body composition (less fat, more muscle). So when you sit down to eat remember to ask yourself “Are these carbohydrates nutrient dense or calorie dense?”
Exclusive Interview: Scott Lade
MR: Scott, thanks for taking the time to be here with us today. If you don’t mind, please take a moment and let my readers know a little bit about yourself.
SL: First off I am married to my wonderful wife Chrissy and we have 3 kids. Britney, Zakk and Reece. I work for Procter and Gamble and have for 19 years. Great company to work for. I work 12 shifts as a Mechanical tech. at the mill. I am sponsored by Titan support and totally appreciate it!
MR: What originally got you into the sport of powerlifting?
SL: I was always an athlete. As a kid I played many sports and as a high school kid it was football, wrestling and track. I lifted too. When that all stopped it left a void in my life. A friend recommended I try a local bench meet. I did it, and I took 2nd and I was hooked. I was able to compete again on my terms. I loved it and by all means still do!!
One side note is that I benched 355 that day and 6 years later benched 715, more than double at the same meet.
MR: Damn, that’s a nice improvement!
As I recall, you’re one of the rare few who not only competes at a high level in bench-only meet, but in full meets as well. How does this affect your training cycles?
SL: There really is not much affect. I do one or 2 full meets a year and maybe 2 more that are bench only. I don’t really have an off season. My training has me pretty much ready to go all the time. That’s not to say that I don’t ramp up for meets because I do, but no real off season.
MR: I always make fun of people who like to bench so much, but only because I suck at it! Could you outline what a typical “Scott Lade approved” bench cycle would look like?
SL: I do mini waves in my training. I will do a 6 week run of odd bench lifts then put on a bench shirt and evaluate where I am. By odd lifts I mean board presses, floor presses, suspended (by Jump Stretch Bands) benches. I do occasionally try a raw bench. After this I shirt up and go for it. After the workout my training partner (Bret Salschieder) and I talk about what we need to shore up for the upcoming meet and I go about trying to improve it. I also train with Arnold Classic SHW champ Jason Christus, Phil Diamond and Matt Gunville from time to time. They are very helpful and keep my head in check.
MR: Training partners are an absolutely integral part of this sport. As well, anyone who’s been at your level for an extended period of time must have some core thoughts or beliefs they adhere to. Could you give us a brief rundown of your training philosophy?
SL: Absolutely!! My most important thing is family first. It took me a while to figure that out but when I did my lifts got so much better. Don’t ever weigh a decision between family and lifting. There is no choice there, family first! Second and almost as important is “if it does not feel right, pack it up” I have learned this the hard way. If it just isn’t there that day walk away. Pack up the gym bag and head home. You will be back tomorrow to train and you will be fresh and ready. If you push too much when it’s just not there you will pay the price with injury or poor form.
MR: Could you tell my readers a little bit about your top 1 or 2 experiences within the sport? This could be friendships made, a specific meet or lift, etc.
SL: Top experience was from the 06′ Bench Nats. It was held in a theatre in Charlotte. The theatre had a top level balcony overlooking the stage. I hit a WR attempt and the crowd went crazy but all I could do was look for my wife in the crowd. I was searching and searching and finally I heard her and she was on the second level getting pictures. I pointed at her and she was as excited as I was, it was just one of those rare moments when all the hard work and sacrifice paid off.
Secondly is all the great people I have met in this sport. Great people.
MR: What goals do you have for yourself in the near future?
SL: In June I travel to Prague,Czech Republic to compete at the Bench press World Championships. I have never won this meet and I very much want to. I would love to win it as a team for the USA and I would like to total 1000 kgs. before I get to old to do so. I have been close.
MR: I think I can say for all of us here at RTS that we wish you the best of luck!
I met you several years ago at Bench World’s and you were one of the nicest and most genuine people I’ve met in the sport. Thanks for taking the time to be with us here today. How can my readers find out more about you?
SL: Very easy, I go on the USAPL forum and the Go Heavy forum pretty often to look at what’s going on in the Power World. Drop me a line there and I’ll get back to you in a hurry.
MR: Awesome – thanks again Scott!
