Training Tip:
Stop making excuses and start getting diesel!
I get people coming to me all the time with a million excuses as to why they haven’t achieved their training related goals. Some are good, some are decent, and some are flat out terrible. I think everyone reading this has heard the expression, “Excuses are like butts – everyone has one and they all stink!”
Sorry for the crude reference but it’s there to make a point.
The second you stop making excuses and start creating solutions is when you really start to make things happen. Let’s be honest, there are a lot of excuses you can come up with to not train – but most of them are lousy, and more importantly, none of them will help you achieve your goals.
Next time you want to cop out of hitting the gym, suck it up and get it done. You’ll feel better in the long run and keep the momentum going to make 2008 your best year ever!
Nutrition Tip:
Ditch the Breakfast Cereals and Have Some Protein!
by Mike Roussell
If there is one thing that that drives me nuts, it is breakfast cereal.
A bowl of cereal is NOT a good breakfast. Infuse protein into your breakfast with eggs, cottage cheese, lean breakfast meats, and/or protein powder. Eating just cereal for breakfast can only guarantee one thing – you’ll be hungry by 10 am!

Exclusive Interview: Chris Poirier
MR: Chris, my audience may not be familiar with you, so let’s go through the basics of who you are, where you’re from, etc.
CP: Hi Mike, my name is Chris Poirier. I am the general manager of Perform Better which is located in Cranston, RI. I have lived in RI all my life. I grew up in Narragansett RI and went to school at the University of Rhode Island. I now currently live in North Kingstown, RI.
MR: What originally got you into the field?
CP: After college I was appointed a head high school football coaching position. I coached for 3 years before I realized that this was not the profession I wanted to be in for the rest of my life. At that very same time Perform Better was just getting started and they were looking for someone that had a background in football and training. After all, the football training market was how Perform Better originated.
MR: Being the general manager at PB has got to be a busy gig. Could you please take us through a typical day for you?
CP: I start the day off by getting into the office around 8am. For the first hour of the day I usually go over reports. After that there is nothing typical. For the rest of the day until I go home at 7pm I could be working on anything from emails, seminar arrangements, meetings, orders, facility design, marketing, staff education & direction, product selection, to numerous other tasks. I guess the greatest thing about my job is that every day is a learning day for me.
MR: The Perform Better catalog has gradually grown over the past couple of years. How do you determine what content will be added to your store?
CP: Product selection is based on three criteria. First, do we like the product and do we feel that it does what it says it’s going to do? We get a lot of help in this area from some of our consultants such as Mike Boyle, Gray Cook and Carlos Santana. Second, we need to have available space in the catalog in order to put it in. It’s difficult to put something in if you don’t have the space to put it in. The third criteria is margin. Do we make enough money on the product so that it pays for its positioning in the catalog.
MR: So there really is a method to the madness!
Just like the catalog, the Perform Better seminars have grown exponentially over the past couple of years. To what do you attribute that growth?
CP: They have and I am very thankful of that. I have always believed if you put the best presenters in a room and create an all star cast, you’re going to get someone to attend.
We have been very fortunate that we have some of the best presenters out there. I always use the line from “Field of Dreams”, “If you Build it They will Come”. I am always looking for good presenters. In fact I go to many seminars throughout the year to listen to new presenters. Its sort of a recruiting trip for me.
MR: What goals or expectations do you have for PB in the future?
CP: Simply, I want to be the best we can be. I know that is a cliché statement; however, I truly believe this is our number one goal. If we keep striving in this direction to be better then everything else (sales, attendance, etc.) will take care of itself. We still have a long way to go before we get to this point, but I am very happy that we are going in the right direction.
MR: Chris, thank you very much for taking the time to interview with us. How can the readers of my newsletter find out more about you and Perform Better?
CP: Thanks Mike for having me. You can find out more about Perform Better at www.performbetter.com or you can email me at [email protected]. If you would rather call me I can be reached at 800-556-7464 ext. 117.
