Building the Efficient Athlete – July 22nd and 23rd

Eric Cressey and I will be giving an intense and informative 2-day seminar at the Peak Performance facility New York coming this July. Whether you’re a personal trainer, a performance coach, or someone who simply wants to improve their performance in the gym, this seminar will be of great benefit to you. Not only will we be covering functional anatomy (something you NEVER know enough of), but we’ll also be covering how to assess yourself and your clients for postural flaws, as well as developing impeccable technique on the lifts you perform each and every day in the gym.

This is the absolute LAST CHANCE you have to sign-up, as the seminar is only 3-weeks away. Don’t miss out!

Inside-Out (I/O): The Ultimate Upper Body Warm-up

It’s time has finally come – the DVD has been shot, and we’re putting the finishing touches on the E-book and manual. If you’ve purchased and used the Magnificent Mobility warm-up before, you now know the power of a great warm-up. However, M2 was geared primarily towards the lower body, improving hip mobility and getting those glutes activated – I/O is strictly geared towards the athlete who wants optimal upper body performance!

Not only are we going to cover the specific exercises, but we’re going to give you the scientific evidence to show how poor posture and warm-ups can lead to sub-optimal performance, and worse yet, injury!

This DVD and accompanying manual will give you all the tools necessary to succeed in the gym. Stay tuned for a formal announcement when it’s ready to ship! (Trust me, RTS newsletter subscribers will be THE FIRST to know about it – membership has its privileges!)

Training Tip:

Use a pause for bigger squats!

For those of you who have trouble out of the hole when squatting, try pause squats. Start off with anywhere from 50-75% of your normal squatting weight and squat down to a deep position. Instead of coming up immediately, hold the deepest position for 1-2 seconds, then explode out of the hole. Pause squats will improve your strength out of the hole, make you more comfortable in the deep squat position, and teach you to stay tight in the hole.

Nutrition Tip:

Fish Oil Rules
by Dr. John Berardi

I consider fish oil to be an essential supplement for fat loss. Data from the University of Western Ontario shows that fish oil supplementation increases lean body mass (during non-dieting conditions), increases BMR (by up to 400kcal/day), decreases inflammation, and improves the ratio of fat/carb oxidized (sparing carbs, burning fat). Recommended dose: Start with 6-10g per day of total fish oil (assuming 30% EPA and DHA).

Product Review: Precision Nutrition

Since John is always gracious about helping me out with tips, ideas, and the like, I figured the least I could do is help him out a little by reviewing his Precision Nutrition (PN) program in this month’s newsletter.

If you’re familiar with JB’s stuff, you already know that the guy not only talks the talk, but walks the walk as well. JB has been successful as a competitive track athlete, powerlifter and bodybuilder, and has used this “Under the Bar” knowledge and applied it to his passion, scientifically- based sports nutrition. As a result, he’s now the nutritional consultant for several of Canada’s Olympic level sports. In essence, PN is the culmination of all his years of hard work.

The beauty of the PN program is that it’s a system of applying proper nutrition to help you achieve the body you desire. Want to lose fat? This can help. Want to gain muscle? It can help you there, too. In fact, too many nutritional “programs” out there fall short in one-way or the other. Some have great science backing them, but no useful information when it comes time to make meals or actually eat food. Others are chock-full of recipes, but give no rhyme or reason as to why you’re this way. In PN, you get the best of both worlds: A science based-program with amazing recipes to boot.

In the PN program you get the following items:

– No-Nonsense Nutrition DVD Series (2-Disc Set)
– Gourmet Nutrition Cookbook
– Precision Nutrition Audio Series (2-Disc Set)
– Precision Nutrition Diet Guide
– Quick Start Guide
– Super Shake Guide
– 5-Minute Meals
– Individualization Guide

Most importantly, the PN program helps you achieve 3 goals that EVERY person should be striving for: 1) Improving health, 2) Improving body composition, and 3) Improving performance. To be quite honest, this is what makes the PN program so powerful – you’re improving every facet of your training, performance and life by eating the way Dr. Berardi recommends. If I sound a little cheesy I apologize – but I’ve taking his advice to heart and seen the best gains of my entire life since following his system.

Bottom line: Precision Nutrition is the best nutritional program out there. If you were to get all this info from working one-on-one with JB, chances are it could cost you literally thousands of dollars. Follow the link above to get this all-encompassing program for just $99.
