RTS Updates
A new way to continue learning
If you have read my blog or newsletter for any period of time, you probably know I’m a huge advocate of continuing education. However, one of the biggest issues is time and travel: Quite often, you have to travel a significant distance, and when you couple that with the costs associated (flights, hotels, meals, and whatever else), it’s very easy to drop a lot of cash on a weekend seminar.
My good buddy Anthony Renna has figured out a great way to work around this – webinars! In this case, all you have to do is sit in front of your computer and you can follow right along while industry leaders like Michael Boyle, Alwyn Cosgrove, Gray Cook, Eric Cressey and a host of others talk shop and help you take your knowledge to the next level. Just try not to focus on the fact that Eric will probably give his presentation in his boxers with a raging case of bead head – because that’s just wrong.
If you’re interested in Anthony’s webinars, definitely check them out ASAP. I’m a little slow in getting this out, so TODAY is the last day you can sign-up at the discounted price. Get in now before it’s too late!
Strength and Conditioning Webinars
Perform Better Chicago this weekend
I’ll be presenting on low back health this weekend at the Perform Better Summit in Chicago. I’ll be getting in sometime Friday afternoon, so if you’re around definitely come up and introduce yourself!
The Future of RTS
It’s always good to take time and reflect on where you’re at and where you’re going in all aspects of your life. Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve really been contemplating the future of RTS, and where I want it to be.
With IFAST growing by leaps and bounds, the demands on my time are growing at an exponential rate. And with that being said, I really have to figure out what is the best use of my time – in other words, figuring out what is really important.
With that being said, here’s what you have to look forward to in regards to all things RTS.
Podcasts and Newsletters
One of my primary goals of this year was getting a successful Podcast up and running. At this point in time we’ve done 7 episodes of In the Trenches Fitness, and I really feel like things are heading in the right direction. I feel like each episode is a little bit better than the previous one. We’ve even been featured as one of iTunes’ “New and Notable” podcasts!
The podcast is truly a double-edged sword, though. I get great feedback from the people who listen to them. However, not everyone is really up on the technology of podcasts yet, so I know only about ½ as many people click-through when compared to a traditional “written” newsletter.
Along those same lines, podcasting is extremely cumbersome when it comes to the back end of things. I can type an entire newsletter in 1-2 hours tops. A podcast will often take up to four hours – by the time I’ve researched the interviewee and developed questions, recorded the interview, and then take care of all the editing and necessary back end work, it’s pretty time consuming!
Regardless (and this is important), I love the podcasts. I love talking shop with other industry people, and I feel like this is where the technology is going in the coming years. As well, I think my personality comes through much more in a live setting than in a written one. So, don’t expect me to drop the podcast any time soon.
What I’ve come up with is that I’m going to do one big thing per week – one week I’ll do a Podcast, the next week I’ll do a written newsletter. I know people tend to prefer one medium over the other, so this way I’ll keep everyone happy, without absolutely killing myself in the process.
Products
This year, I’m going to be tireless in my efforts to release some new material. Bill and I recorded our “Indy Seminar Series” last year, but I haven’t created any totally new content since I released Bulletproof Knees almost two years ago.
In the coming year, I fully intend to have three new products completed. The first will be the collaborative effort between Eric, Bill and myself. Let’s just say this – if you thought Magnificent Mobility and Inside-Out were good, we’re going to take this project to a whole ‘nother level! Definitely stay tuned.
The manual that I’ve been talking about for the past 6 months has been on the back burner, but it will be re-started once we get through August. In August, Bill and I are going to be doing our second annual Indy Seminar Series. In this case, rather than covering a bunch of different topics in a quick-hit format, we’re going to outline the IFAST approach to core training. This is going be performed at IFAST, with a mix of scientific background/lecture and coaching/hands-on work. Needless to say, I think this is going to be a great resource for strength coaches, personal trainers, and the lay fitness enthusiast alike.
The Blog
Expect the blog to keep trucking along as usual. Blogging is one of the easiest things I do, because I can typically create some pretty decent content in a fairly short amount of time. Plus, blogging really fits with my ADD personality – I can write about whatever I want, whenever I want! On bad weeks, two posts may be it, but most weeks you can typically expect 3-4 posts.
Miscellaneous Stuff
One of the cool things about my new site is that there’s a ton of different mediums in which you can learn and interact with me. I’m going to do my best to post new pictures to my Flickr account, add new videos to my YouTube page, and perform basic site maintenance/clean-up once per month. As many seminars as I attend, there’s no reason I can’t get pictures up on a monthly basis. Finally, if you’re on Twitter and not following me, shame on you! This is the easiest way to keep track of what I’ve got going on.
Summary
As the saying goes, “You can sleep when you’re dead.” The last couple of months have really epitomized that for me – I’m working harder than ever, but just because you’re working hard doesn’t mean you’re working smart. My goal going forward is to continue to bring great content to the forefront, but being smarter and more efficient in doing so.
As always, thanks for your support and look forward to big things from RTS in the coming months!
Stay strong
