Here’s the honest-to-goodness truth about eating right:
It SHOULDN’T be that hard.
I get IFAST and online clients alike who ask me, “What should I be eating?” “What shouldn’t I be eating?”
“Is there a basic diet that you follow?”
And to some extent, I can see where they’re coming from. With so many fad diets and quack gurus espousing their diet of the month, it’s probably easy to get overwhelmed.
With that being said, however, I also think a lot of people play dumb/ignorant when it comes to dieting/eating right. They know that there’s a difference between eating a potato as it is and a potato chip – they just don’t seem to care.
Whether it’s ignorance, or flat out laziness, I’m not sure.
What I can tell you, however, is that if you’re serious about packing on muscle, getting leaner, or just feeling better in general, you need to make a lifestlye change – not simply go on a diet.
If you need a nutritional foundation, I would highly recommend picking up a copy of either John Berardi’s Precision Nutrition, or Mike Roussell’s Naked Nutrition Guide. Both will give you the nutritional foundation necessary to start making more educated decisions immediately.

After that, it really comes down to selling out and following the principles as often as possible. Generally, I’m a big believer in the 90% rule – if you eat right about 90% of the time, you’re doing pretty well for yourself (competitive bodybuilders and figure/fitness athletes not-withstanding).
Don’t make eating right any harder than it needs to be. Start developing your nutritional foundation today, and then you can refine the process over the coming weeks, months and years.
Stay strong

Good stuff Mike
Even though I am no Beradi or a professional trainer for that matter, the advice I usually give to people is simple and easy to apply.
Eat every 3 hours
Eat lean protein with every meal
Eat a Fruit/Veg with every meal
Drink only water/-green tea/Crystal Light
Eat the majority of your carbs from Low GI, unprocessed sources
Eat whole unprocessed natural foods that our ancestors could have eaten
With so many diets and plans out there, I like to keep it simple, especially when helping someone for the first time
Great blog, Ed
