A Few Thoughts on Professional Development

So the other day, I’m working with a new mentee and our goal is to figure out what’s holding him back.

This guy was listening to podcasts, reading books, talking with other coaches – basically crushing it from the outside looking in.

So why did he feel like he wasn’t getting any better?

Like he was not improving?

After diving in a little more, it quickly became apparent – and I think this lesson is applicable to many coaches out there today.

You see, when you’re just getting started, everything moves the needle.

You can learn listen to a podcast about coaching and cuing, read an article about set and rep schemes, or watch a webinar on long-term periodization, and all of it can be impactful – because it’s all new and novel.

BUT the longer you do this, the more this “mile wide, inch deep” approach fails to work.

Instead, if you want to make your continuing education truly impactful, you have to settle into one of those deep dives.

Maybe it’s learning about coaching and cuing, set and rep schemes OR long-term periodization – but instead of trying to learn about all of them at once, you spend weeks or months at a time learning about one of them.

Maybe it’s taking an online course or attending a seminar by a trusted expert, to truly learn the ins-and-outs of their system.

Or maybe it’s bringing on a mentor on who has “been there and done that” to help you level up your coaching skills.

The point of this little blog is simple…

…the longer you do this, the more you have to push aside the short-term/immediate gratification mindset with regards to continuing education, and realize it’s the long-game that leads to true mastery.

Sure you can take action in the short-term that will move you towards your goal, but it’s those longer, sustained efforts that are necessary to truly move the needle.

Regardless of where you’re at in your career, I hope this little blog helps YOU get a little bit better!

All the best,
MR
